CYCLOASIS

Cycling to reconnect earth and humanity

Cycloasis started as a bicycle journey of 4 months and more than 2000 km through France, visiting different sustainable projects, ‘Oasis’, based on an open mindset, participation, and respect for earth and soil, while reconnecting the wealth of nature with human well-being and creating activities that add value to their communities.

The meaning of OASIS

My inspiration came from Pierre Rabhi, the French philosopher, writer and expert on bio-agriculture. With his origins in Algeria, he is a man of the dessert. Not surprisingly that the concept of an Oasis is a metaphor for his life vision and the way he combines sustainable agriculture with viable human activity in respect of nature, earth, and the soil: ‘la terre’. Pierre Rabhi developed a wider notion on how we can (re) establish a respectful relationship between nature & humanity.

We all have a notion of what an Oasis looks like. A place of plenty and good things, representing: harmony, fertility, shelter, abundance, simplicity, peace, a place of safety, a sanctuary, warmth, serenity, taking time, …

Oasis, as used in ‘Oasis en Tous Lieux’ (Oasis Everywhere), created by Pierre Rabhi, reflects his philosophy of a ‘sobriété heureuse’ – happiness in simplicity, and is about reconnecting earth & humanity. Oasis’ are about innovative entrepreneurial projects respecting nature and an open mindset, while creating added value to the environment and communities through meaningful social, cultural and economic activities.

OASIS stands for:

O :   ouvrons nos consciences  – opening our minds

I :    initions la création de lieux de vie   initiating the creation of living space

S :   semons des graines d’espoir  –  sowing the seeds of hope

The spirit of Cycloasis

Cycloasis is a journey of encounters and connection, that embrace the OASIS principles and that connect nature & humanity in everyday life. Showing innovative initiatives across countries and languages, that inspire others to make a change. Cycloasis is my support to people and networks on the ground, for which I am willing to move mountains on my bicycle to spread these remarkable human stories!

The rainbow of the logo reflects this spirit by:

  • beauty and colourfulness of nature – with its elements: water, air, earth, and fire
  • amazement and opening up – a whole spectrum of capabilities and diversity
  • reconnecting earth and sky – nature & humanity

Cycloasis is my pleasure for contemplation, connection to nature, and enriching human encounters. As Peter Senge, C. Otto Scharmer e.a. (2004) in: ‘Presence; exploring profound change in people, organizations and society’, eloquently described: “… growing, in our sense of connection with nature and with one another and learning to live in ways that naturally cultivate our capacity to be human.
